How to Choose an IGCSE Add Math Tutor (What Actually Matters)

Searching “Add Math tutor” in Malaysia returns hundreds of options, tuition centres, university students, school teachers moonlighting, and full-time specialists. They are not interchangeable, and the differences that matter are checkable before you pay anything. Here is the checklist we’d use for our own children (yes, even though we are a tutoring service, judge us against it too).
The five checks that predict results
1. Does the tutor specialise in Cambridge 0606, not just “maths”? Add Math is its own ecosystem: M/A/B mark schemes, command words, a non-calculator Paper 1, single-tier papers, and a syllabus that changed in 2025. A tutor excellent at SPM Add Maths or 0580 will teach correct mathematics while missing the exam layer where grades are actually decided. Ask directly: “Which 0606 sessions’ papers have you taught from this year? What changed in the 2025 syllabus?” A specialist answers without blinking (the answers: Paper 1 went non-calculator, surds/indices became assumed knowledge, circle geometry was added).
2. Do they mark written working, or just explain concepts? Explaining is the easy half. Grades move when someone reads your child’s written working line by line and says: that step would have lost the method mark. Ask how homework is reviewed. “We go through the answers” is a weaker answer than “I mark scripts against the real mark scheme.”
3. Is there a real trial class? A proper trial, a full teaching session with the actual tutor, not a sales chat, is the only reliable signal, because it shows teaching quality, rapport and setup all at once. Be wary of anyone who wants a term’s commitment before your child has been taught once.
4. Will the same person teach every week? Centres sometimes rotate tutors; progress resets each time. Confirm continuity, and confirm who is accountable for tracking progress toward a marks target.
5. Is the price structure honest? Reasonable rates for IGCSE Add Math in Malaysia run roughly RM50–150/hr online depending on experience and format, the full market breakdown is in our tuition cost guide. Watch for registration fees, materials fees and long lock-ins layered on top of a low headline rate.
Red flags that predict wasted months
- “We teach all subjects”, generalist centres put generalists on Add Math.
- No questions asked about your child’s current grade, school syllabus or exam session before quoting.
- Guarantees of an A*. Nobody honest guarantees grades; honest tutors guarantee process.
- Homework set but never marked in writing.
- Can’t tell you which past-paper sessions still match the current syllabus (the answer).
Where we fit (stated plainly, since you’re comparing)
This site is run by Teacher Rig. 8 years teaching IGCSE/Add Math, mechatronics engineering background, who teaches 0606 himself and leads a small handpicked team of Add Math specialists. Classes are 1-to-1, online anywhere in Malaysia, RM80/hr in 1.5-hour sessions, with written working marked against real 0606 schemes every week.
